Over the past year more than 1,400 homes in Uddingston and Bellshill have received a mix of loft and cavity wall insulation, or draught proofing.

In many cases the work has been carried out completely free through initiatives such as the Universal Home Insulation Scheme (UHIS), which helps private households and is taking energy efficiency improvements across the housing stock in Scotland to an entirely new level.

Insulating a home to the recommended level can save hundreds of pounds a year on domestic energy bills, and cut annual carbon emissions by around a tonne.

To see the benefits first hand Mr McMahon visited his constituent Mr Osuelik, who has just had cavity wall insulation installed.

Mr McMahon said: “The work undertaken by Carillion Energy Services through schemes such as UHIS show clearly how we can help hard-pressed households keep the lid on raising energy costs. Having an energy efficient home is undoubtedly the best and most sustainable way of making our homes warm and affordable heat – particularly if our winters are going to be as severe as the past two."

The fact that companies such as Carillion are able to assist so many people through these energy saving programmes is also proof that Scotland is a genuine leader in the transition to low carbon living.”

Formerly Eaga, Carillion Energy Services is at the forefront of the low carbon economy and of efforts to tackle climate change.

From its Scotland operation based in Livingston it has around 300 staff and works with a number of councils, local authorities and private customers to provide a range of large scale green energy solutions including insulation, heating and renewable technologies such as solar PV, ground and air source heat pumps.
