Sustainability success for Carillion in industry green awards

June 2011

Leading support services and construction company Carillion is celebrating twice over after having its community support and green credentials recognised at the highest level.

The company, which includes Newcastle-based Carillion Energy Services, has topped its sector and gained Platinum status in the prestigious Business in the Community (BiTC) Corporate Responsibility Index – and it has just been named in the top ten of the Sunday Times Best Green Companies awards.

With perfect timing the news also comes at the close of Carillion’s annual Sustainability Week of events, which coincides with World Environment Day.

The BiTC Corporate Responsibility Index is the UK’s leading voluntary benchmark of Corporate Responsibility (CR) which compares, celebrates and communicates the social and environment performance of companies. Those that achieve Platinum status demonstrate that CR is embedded in strategic decision-making and incentive structures and have improved CR management and performance over three/four years.

While the Sunday Times Best Green Companies awards recognises companies at the cutting edge of improving corporate environmental performance and this year Carillion achieved tenth place overall and fourth in its category (Bigger Companies with High Environmental Impact).

Carillion is one of only 15 companies to remain in the Best Green Companies top 60 list since it started four years ago.

Encouraged by this success hundreds of Carillion employees have just taken part in a range of community and green-focused events as part of Sustainability Week.

In Newcastle, for example, call centre staff gave up their time to help local respite care charity St Oswald’s Hospice undertake a telephone fundraising exercise.

Liz Watchorn, Community Engagement Manager at Carillion Energy Services, said: “This was just one event of many and was a perfect way to help promote sustainable communities in this region. It was also good fun for the staff who all want to help again in the future.”

Sarah Johnson, Head of Fundraising at St Oswald’s Hospice, added: “The man power that the Carillion team provided helped us achieve in one evening what would have taken us weeks. They were professional, committed to the cause, quick to learn and great fun.”

Carillion chose this year’s Sustainability Week to launch its latest 2020 Sustainability Strategy which concentrates on six positive outcomes: enable low-carbon economies; protect the environment; lead the way in our sector; build a successful business; support sustainable communities and provide better prospects for our people.

The strategy aims to build on the success of its considerable record in sustainability and support Carillion’s goal to become the leading sustainable support services company.
