MP champions green transport by Carillion
August 2011
Portsmouth North MP Penny Mordaunt has visited a pioneering initiative by Carillion to test hydrogen-powered vehicles for its commercial fleet.
Leading support services provider Carillion has teamed up with the energy storage, clean fuel company ITM Power – and has chosen its Portsmouth depot for the hydrogen on-site trial (HOST).

The move confirms Carillion’s commitment to sustainability and further enhances its status confirmed in a recent Sunday Times list as the UK’s 10th greenest company.
Under the week-long trial, two transit vehicles based at Carillion’s energy services depot in Portsmouth have been refuelled with hydrogen, generated on site using ITM Power’s transportable high pressure refuelling units (HFuel).
Hydrogen fuel is widely regarded as the leading low carbon option for commercial vehicle fleets because of the clean, zero-carbon tailpipe emissions, fast refuelling and the extended range. In addition when produced by ITM’s HFuel, there is no need for a fuel delivery as the hydrogen is made from just water and electricity, on-site, at the point of use.
Carillion has a transport fleet of around 10,000 vehicles, which accounts for around half of the company’s C02 emissions.
Ms Mordaunt said: “As society makes the shift to more sustainable living it is vital that all energy users do what they can. Relatively high energy users should lead by example and I am delighted that this transport initiative is being delivered by a locally-based business.”
Graham Tidball, Operational Director for Carillion Energy Services, said: “At Carillion our commitment to sustainability and managing our impact on the environment is embedded right across the business. As part of this we are determined to lead the way in offering serious low carbon transport solutions for our clients. We view ITM’s HFuel technology as playing an important role, and we look forward to seeing the results of this trial and how we can develop our fuel efficient efforts further.”
Commenting for ITM Power, CEO Graham Cooley added: “We are delighted that Carillion plc have trialled HFuel at their Portsmouth base, and we look forward to evaluating the data gathered during the trial to demonstrate HFuel for running commercial fleets on a clean fuel without compromising their existing business routine."
